The 10th digit in the Tesla VIN indicates a letter for the year of manufacture. Until 2019 this reflect the year in which the vehicle was actually built. This changed, however, at the end of 2019 when shifted to reflect the year for which production typically started. For example, a Tesla VIN with the letter L (2020) may have been made as early as November 2019.

Digit 12 is the start of the sequence number, sometimes with assigned meaning as indicated below:
P = Performance
S = Signature
F = Founders
Early model Tesla VINs beginning digit 12 with B are tagged Beta. A rare Tesla VIN with the 12th digit beginning with A would reference Alpha production for the unit.
VIN digits 13 to digit 17 are general production sequence numbers assigned during manufacture and include: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0
The Tesla VIN decoder information presented on this page has been adapted from the United States Department of Transportation NHTSA Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing (vPIC) system, as well as from a variety of Tesla resources and crowdsourced information across the web. The information provided on this page is intended to serve as basic Tesla Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) decoding, as well as source data from the Manufacturer Information Database (MID), Manufacturer Equipment Plant Identification, and associated data. This information is an aggregate of the publicly available data and is to be used for general informational purposes only. If you notice any errors in our data and Tesla VIN decoding presentation, please contact us with your suggested changes with an included source for the information provided.
Can you use our Tesla VIN decoder to get battery size? Yes, you can! But it won’t give you the specific sub-model data (for example, Model S Performance, or Model Y Long Range). This is because Tesla only has this data in their VIN database—you can’t get it from the VIN sequence alone (unless you’re Tesla, of course).
However, you can use the VIN decoder to determine the year and broad model type (2016 Model S, etc.) and then you can narrow down the battery options by looking at photos, badging, or other aspects of the vehicle (including the software screen, if you have access to that).
Our Tesla Model 3 VIN decoder will give results for all trim levels of Model 3 (Standard Range, SR+, Mid Range, Long Range AWD/RWD, and also Performance). It will show the year and other various specs that you may find helpful when you’re looking to decode a Tesla Model 3 VIN.
Finding a good Tesla Model S VIN decoder that you can use for deciphering and decoding a Tesla Model S VIN isn’t always easy.
But, with Find My Electric’s Tesla VIN decoder, you can plug in any Model S VIN and get basic vehicle info about the year, model, and other specs such as standard equipment.
