After numerous gearbox-related issues with the Roadster prototypes and a temporary solution of a locked-position, dual speed gearbox for the first production run, Tesla began offering a redesigned drivetrain that they introduced as the Roadster 1.5. Eventually referred to as the Roadster 2.0, the redesign included a single-speed gearbox, reduced drag, and increased efficiency through advanced motor tech and other equipment tweaks.
The next set of Tesla Roadsters were produced with this new design, and owners of the earlier Roadster were offered a four hour retrofit to update their design at no extra cost. The improvements made for the Roadster 2.0, most thoroughly realized through the addition of the Sport Package and improved power management, brought its acceleration speed up to the promised time of 0 to 60 mph in about 4 seconds.
On the interior of the 2.0 Roadster, small updates were made to cabin functionality, including a new glove box, improved climate controls, and better cooling output. An optional Executive Leather package offered luxury details and additional comfort to the inside of the cabin, featuring French stitched interior accenting. Interior color designs came in Orange, Red, Saddle, Yellow, Beige, Black, Cream, Dark Gray, and Light Gray. An additional Carbon Fiber design was made available through the Sport Package.
Paint colors for the Roadster 2.0 included a decent list of supercar brights and classics in Arctic White, Radiant Red, Sterling Silver, Thunder Gray, Twilight Blue Metallic, Very Orange, Brilliant Yellow Metallic, Electric Blue, Fusion Red, Glacier Blue Metallic, Jet Black, Obsidian Black Metallic, and Racing Green. 16” front and 17” back Black Forged wheels, the differing sizes necessary for the Lotus Elise body design, smartly complemented these color schemes.
Though Tesla is well-known for their Autopilot driver’s assistance software, the technology was not available when the Roadster was in production. Because of this, the Roadster 2.0 and all other Roadster iterations were not hardware capable Autopilot.
