Release for order on January 7, 2021—the Tesla Model Y Standard Range RWD carried an initial price tag of $41,990 with 244 miles of EPA rated range, a top speed of 135 MPH and a 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds.
The arrival of this Model Y is notable because Elon Musk had been in the past saying that the range of 244 miles was “unacceptably low” because it fell under 250 miles (which he felt was the minimum).
2021 marked the first (and only) production year so far for this new vehicle, as Tesla sought to come out with a new EV offering for the new year as Ford, VW, and other auto makers have entered the low-end segment.
The Model Y Standard Range is only available in rear-wheel drive (RWD) and doesn’t have the option to upgrade it to AWD (you must buy the larger battery dual motor option if you want four-wheel power).
Another notable option that arrived with the Standard Range Model Y is the seven seat interior, for the price of $3,000 more. This adds a third row seat that sits to more passengers behind the second row. Interior colors are limited to two: All Black, and Black and White (which costs an extra $1,000).
Colors available for the Tesla Model Y Standard Range RWD include Telsa’s five core floors: Pearl White Multi-Coat (standard), Solid Black ($1,000), Midnight Silver Metallic ($1,000), Deep Blue Metallic ($1,000), and Red Multi-Coat ($2,000).
Wheel options include the 19” Gemini Wheels or the 20” Induction Wheels (sorry, if you want the 21” Uberturbines, you’ll have to upgrade to the Model Y Performance). Rounding out the exterior options for the Model Y trim is a tow itch that allows for towing up to 3,500 lbs and costs $1,000.
In terms of software options, there is one—Full Self-Driving (FSD) which at the time of writing carries a hefty $10,000 price tag, although Tesla does occasionally allow users to upgrade to Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) from time to time which includes Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, and Summon for approximately $4,000 (although this is subject to change at any time when they make the deal available).
The Model Y Standard Range RWD represents the most affordable way to get into a Tesla SUV and is one of the best bargains on the used market.
