As the top tier Model X for Tesla’s new naming scheme of 2019, the Model X Performance delivered a thrilling ride that was capable of a 3.5 second 0 to 60 mph acceleration with standard operation or a jaw-dropping 2.8 seconds with Ludicrous mode enabled. Further tweaks to the system in 2020 saw the Model X Performance shooting out of the gate even faster, clocking the 0 to 60 mph time in 2.7 seconds or better. Top speed of the Model X Performance remained consistent with earlier models at around 155 mph, but enhancements to the suspension provided a much smoother ride.
With its iconic and quirky Falcon Wing rear door assembly, the Model X Performance was just as distinctive in the parking lot as it was on the road. However, classic colors in a small palette kept the Model X Performance from becoming just a sideshow, including only the basics in Pearl White Multi-Coat, Red Multi-Coat, Deep Blue Metallic, Midnight Silver Metallic, and Solid Black.
The exterior remained sleek to reduce drag, and what little did appear on the outside of the Model X Performance was mostly high tech sensory equipment for Autopilot and other safety and performance programming on the Model X. Hardware capability for Autopilot was now standard on all Model X variants, and the Model X Performance came equipped with hardware AP3. This configuration allowed for Base Autopilot programming, now standard on Tesla’s Model X, and capability for the Full Self Driving (FSD) software upgrade.
Adjustments to efficiency and driving dynamics on the Model X Performance were furthered by the Wheel size selection. The 19” Cyclone Wheel made room for a larger tire, often used by drivers in colder climates to better suit road conditions. 20” Wheels in Silver Helix, Silver Slipstream (the Performance’s standard design), Sonic Carbon, and Two Tone Slipstream offered good grip and durability. Finally, for a reduction in efficiency and an increase in handling and cornering abilities, the 22” Wheel was available in the Turbine design (in Silver or Onyx Black).
Interior comfort also played a key factor in the Model X Performance, and enhancements to leg room, seat folding abilities, and seating materials gave the spacious interior of the Model X an increased luxury feel over previous iterations. Material for the seats came as synthetic Vegan Leather, a durable and easy to care for material that Tesla used to replace previous seating options. Interior color choices were in All Black, Cream, or Black and White. To complement the minimalist luxury styling of the interior, the Model X Performance Dash came in Dark Ash Wood, Oak Wood, Figured Ash Wood, and Carbon Fiber designs.
