Fresh from Tesla’s assembly line beginning in 2012, the Tesla Model S 85 automobile came equipped with a 85 kWh lithium ion battery pack and promised to deliver an estimated driving range of 258 miles on a single full charge. The 460 hp, 443 ft-lb torque motor of the rear wheel drive Model S 85 allowed for smooth handling, a generous top speed of 110 mph, and a respectable 0 to 60mph acceleration of 6.5 seconds. Discontinued in 2016, the 85 kWh Tesla Model S remains a solid option on the used Tesla market, delivering a quality driving experience marked by comfort and punctuated by style.
The sleek, modern aesthetic of the Tesla Model S 85 came standard, centering the interior design around the car’s minimalist 17-inch touch screen control panel which allows access to the majority of the vehicle’s controls. The Model S standard dashboard was in a Piano Black, but five different wood dash designs (Dark Ash, Figured Ash, Glossy Obeche, Lace, and Matte Obeche) and a Carbon Fiber dash design option were also available. Seating options for the spacious black, tan, or gray interior included Nappa leather, multi-pattern textile, and vegan leather (introduced in 2016).
The exterior options of the Tesla Model S 85 consist of classic and metallic paint colors and several wheel profiles. Model S 85 trim paint options changed a bit over the years, with the Model S 2012 seen in Catalina White, Anza Brown Metallic, Monterey Blue Metallic, Sequoia Green Metallic, Shasta Pearl White, Tiburon Gray Metallic, and Sierra Black, while 2013 and 2014 found a more modestly named paint palette consisting of Blue Metallic, Brown Metallic, Gray Metallic, Green Metallic, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Red Multi-Coat, Silver Metallic, Solid White, and Solid Black. The 2015 and 2016 Model S 80 dropped the Green and Brown Metallic options but added several others: Deep Blue, Midnight Silver, Obsidian Black, and Titanium.
Wheel options for the Tesla Model S 85 included the popular base 19” design, the 19” Cyclone, 19” Slipstream (available in Silver or Sonic Carbon), and the 19” Tempest. Performance 21” wheels were also available in Arachnid (Black or Silver), 21” Turbine (Silver or Gray), and 21” Twin Turbine designs (Silver or Sonic Carbon).
While earlier years of the Tesla Model S 85 (2012-2013) were not equipped for Tesla’s famous Autopilot software, later years of the 85 kWh trim were hardware capable, allowing for Autopilot hardware versions 1.0 and 2.0 (2016) before the Model S 85 was discontinued.
